God's Way and Not Man's Way: A Lesson in Faith

God's Way and Not Man's Way: A Lesson in Faith

Pr Caleb Akinola

On Saturday, March 16th, 2024, our church, the St Austell Seventh-day Adventist Church, eagerly anticipated celebrating Global Youth Day. This special day is dedicated to young people going out to share their faith and support those in need. As the date approached, we monitored the weather forecast, which promised clear skies and mild temperatures, perfect for our planned activities. However, on the morning of Global Youth Day, we awoke to a heavy downpour.

As I listened to the rain beating against my window, a sense of worry began to creep in. I prayed fervently for God to stop the rain so our youth could carry out their mission without hindrance. Yet, the rain continued unabated. Feeling disheartened, I contemplated canceling the event. But before making any decisions, I prayed once more, asking God to intervene and clear the skies. Still, the rain persisted.

In the midst of my anxiety and doubt, a profound sense of calm washed over me as the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart. The message was clear: God had heard my prayers, but He had chosen not to stop the rain for a reason. This rain was a test of our faith—a faith that must be steadfast, whether in sunshine or storm.

Humbled and convicted, I apologized to the Holy Spirit for my lack of trust. Embracing this divine lesson, I stepped out into the rain, determined to proceed with our mission. To my surprise and immense joy, I found our youth already gathered on the high street. Despite the downpour, they were singing, sharing their faith, and distributing aid with unwavering enthusiasm and joy.

The sight of these young people, drenched but undeterred, filled my heart with gratitude and awe. Their commitment to God's work, regardless of the weather, was a powerful testament to the strength of their faith. They had not let the rain dampen their spirits or deter their mission. Instead, they saw it as an opportunity to demonstrate their dedication and resilience.

Our efforts that day were met with open hearts and curious minds. Passersby, moved by the sight of young people braving the rain to share their message of hope and love, stopped to listen and engage and most importantly, we discovered a young man who has been reading our books but yet to locate our church and he was happy to join us and also started coming to church.

One of the families I later visited after GYD testified, “When I saw you in the rain with your uniform on, I was wondering what the millitary guy is doing here because that was my first time of seen a complete Pathfinder Uniform and not also I didnt know that we have a new pastor. I then inquired of who this millitary guy was and I got to know you are the new pastor. This totaly changed me and helped my faith.’’ Charly. The rain, which I initially saw as an obstacle, became a catalyst for deeper connections and more meaningful interactions.

As we gathered later to reflect on the day, our collective joy knew no bounds. We praised God for the lesson He had taught us—that His ways are not our ways, and His plans are always perfect, even when they diverge from our expectations. The rain had tested our faith, and we had emerged stronger and more united in our mission.

This experience reminded us that faith is not about seeking comfort or convenience. True faith endures through challenges and thrives in adversity. It calls us to trust in God's plan, even when we cannot see the path ahead. As we continue our journey, we carry this lesson in our hearts, knowing that God's way is always the best way.

Global Youth Day 2024 will forever be etched in our memories as a day when our faith was tested and triumphantly affirmed. It was a day when we learned to lean not on our understanding but to trust wholly in God's wisdom and timing. We give thanks for the rain, for it revealed the depth of our commitment and the boundless nature of God's love and guidance.
