Laughter filled the room, as the children joined their classmates for Sabbath School. "Happy Sabbath Children," I said to all the children. "Did you have a lovely week?". Bright eager eyes focused on me. Enthusiasm etched on each little face. They were anxious to experience Sabbath school this week. And what an experience this was... their own Zoom Sabbath School.
Lockdown, social distancing, isolation... our children's little worlds have been turned upside down. They miss 'normal' life and meeting their friends every Sabbath morning. The Belfast children's department wondered how to continue to have 'normal' Sabbath school. After lots of prayer and planning, Zoom Sabbath School was established. Teachers sent out messages. Parents learnt how to be more internet-savvy. Excitement mounted. The day finally arrived. The children enjoyed the singing, listening to the story, which was adapted from this quarter’s kindergarten lesson, and craft as activities to do at home. The children were eager to show their crafts to the rest of the classmates during the zoom meeting or shared later through the WhatsApp group.
Zoom Sabbath School has become the highlight of the week for many of the children. A new normal in these abnormal times. Most children (and their parents) can’t wait for next Sabbath to arrive. God is good.
If your children are missing Sabbath school and would like to join, please contact Pastor Ben for more information. You can also ask him for a group membership to the Belfast Children’s Sabbath School Facebook page. We look forward to hearing from you!
