The Cuisle Centre has organised its very first Street Feast. Street Feast is held annually, throughout Ireland, on a specific date and it is a day of local lunches across Ireland, this year it was on 10th June. The aim of a Street Feast is to eat great food, celebrate local community and meet new people who live nearby. It was estimated that 1300 Street Feasts were held throughout Ireland and that 120,000 neighbours got together.

“At the Cuisle Centre, we had an International flare to our food. The car park was colourfully decorated with bunting and balloons. The tables were set, but all we needed were the people,” says Heather Keough, director of the Cuisle Centre. Well they came in their droves. Between church members and the local community over fifty people attended the Feast.

Serving fruitVolunteers stood out on the street with plates of Watermelon and delicious crackers, opening many opportunities to talk to new people and engage with our community. One of the church’s young people, Anastasia did face painting all afternoon, which was a massive hit with the kids. Among other activities that were on offer were ‘Guess the name of the Teddy’, balloon modelling and bubbles for the little kids.

On the Sabbath afternoon prior to the Street Feast Joan an Elder in Ranelagh Seventh-day Adventist church, and local Pathfinder director, Merrell had gone to visit with some elderly people in the community to offer the services of the Pathfinders. They got talking to a lady who had relatives who were Seventh-day Adventists in Australia. As a result of this conversation she came along to the Feast and brought two friends, who loved the company and the food.

“We had a thoroughly enjoyable Street Feast and it was definitely a great opportunity to meet our local neighbours,” says Heather Keough. “God opened doors and we look forward to what comes as a result of this.” On Sunday evening after everybody had gone home, a video of the event was uploaded to Facebook. It was put together by one of the church’s youth, Jazmin. this can be viewed on the Cuisle Centre Facebook page.

Enjoying the SunshineEveryone who attended enjoyed the afternoon and have stated that they look forward to next year. Somebody suggested that the church hold its weekly Sabbath fellowship lunch outside - weather permitting. This would be an ideal opportunity to continue engaging with the community in such a positive way.
